About

We believe light is the soul of every great space.

Light Design Studio is a residential lighting design practice founded on a simple conviction: that the quality of light in a home shapes the quality of life within it.

Our story

Light Design Studio was founded in New Delhi in 2018 by Eleanor Marsh, after a decade working as a lighting designer across Europe and South Asia. Arriving in India, Eleanor was struck by something she hadn't encountered elsewhere: a residential architecture of extraordinary richness — layered materials, deep courtyards, jali screens that fracture light into geometry — yet lighting that was almost universally treated as an afterthought.

India's homes deserved better. The same rigour that the best architects bring to space, and the best interior designers bring to material and colour, needed to be applied to light. She opened the studio on M Block Market, Greater Kailash 2, with a single conviction: that considered lighting design could transform how Indian families experience their homes.

Today we work with architects, developers, and homeowners across New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram on residential projects of every scale — from a single room to a whole new build. Every project is led by Eleanor, with a small team of designers who understand both the craft of light and the particular character of Indian domestic life: the festival that fills a home with guests, the afternoon that calls for shade and stillness, the evening that belongs to family.

How we think

Design principles we return to on every project.

01

Light before fixtures

We design with light itself — its quality, direction, and colour temperature — before we think about the objects that produce it. The fixture is the last decision, not the first.

02

Layers, not levels

Good residential lighting is never a single source. We design in layers — ambient, task, accent, and decorative — so every room can be adjusted to suit the moment, from morning routine to candlelit dinner.

03

Warmth as a default

Homes should feel warm. We default to warm white light sources (2700–3000K) and use cooler temperatures only where the task genuinely demands it. Cold light in a living room is one of the most common and most correctable mistakes in residential design.

04

Control that disappears

The best lighting control system is one you never have to think about. We specify control schemes that are intuitive enough to use without a manual, and flexible enough to adapt as your life in the space evolves.

The people behind the work.

Eleanor Marsh

Eleanor Marsh

Founder & Principal Designer

Eleanor has been designing residential lighting for over fifteen years across Europe and India. She moved to New Delhi in 2016, drawn by the richness of Indian residential architecture and the opportunity to bring specialist lighting design to a market where it was almost entirely absent. She founded Light Design Studio in 2018 and has since led projects across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

James Okafor

James Okafor

Senior Lighting Designer

James joined the studio in 2021 after five years at a specialist lighting consultancy in Amsterdam. He relocated to India with a particular interest in how smart home technology intersects with traditional Indian spatial typologies — the haveli, the bungalow, the high-rise apartment. He leads our collaboration projects with architects and developers across Gurugram and Mumbai.

Priya Nair

Priya Nair

Lighting Designer

Priya grew up in Bengaluru and trained as an interior designer before specialising in lighting. She brings an intimate understanding of how Indian homes are actually lived in — the importance of the pooja room, the centrality of the kitchen, the way a terrace becomes an extension of the living space in the evenings. She leads many of our residential design projects from concept through to specification.

BA Interior Design, NID Ahmedabad

Working with Light Design Studio changed how I think about residential projects in India. They understand that light here isn't just functional — it's cultural. The way they handled the transition from Diwali entertaining to everyday living in our GK2 home was remarkable.

Arjun Mehta

Principal Architect, Mehta & Associates, New Delhi

Eleanor and her team are the only lighting designers I recommend to clients across Delhi and Mumbai. Their process is rigorous, their taste is impeccable, and they genuinely understand Indian materials — the way marble behaves differently from stone, how brass fittings read under warm versus cool light.

Kavya Iyer

Interior Designer, Studio Iyer, Bengaluru

We've worked with Light Design Studio on three residential developments in Gurugram now. The quality of the lighting schemes is consistently exceptional — and they understand the expectations of Indian homeowners in a way that most international consultants simply don't.
